The UMLAUF is a nonprofit art museum and outdoor sculpture garden in Austin, Texas dedicated to the work of 20th-century American sculptor Charles Umlauf with rotating exhibitions of contemporary artists. It sits on six acres near Barton Springs and Zilker Park, featuring over 50 sculptures in a peaceful landscape of native Texas plants, ponds, and walking paths. It is one of Austin's most unique cultural destinations where art meets nature.
Charles Umlauf (1910–1994) was a nationally recognized American sculptor who taught at the University of Texas at Austin for 40 years. His work is held in major collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution. In 1985, he and his wife Angeline gifted their home, studio, and 168 sculptures to the City of Austin as the foundation of the UMLAUF today.
The UMLAUF Sculpture Garden + Museum officially opened in 1991, after the City of Austin built a museum on the land adjacent to the Umlauf family home to display the donated collection. In 2026, the museum is celebrating its 35th anniversary.
The UMLAUF is an independent nonprofit. While Charles Umlauf was a beloved professor at UT Austin for four decades, the museum is managed separately and is not part of the University of Texas system. It operates as an independent nonprofit organization.
You can visit Tuesday–Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM and Saturday–Sunday from 11 AM to 4 PM. The UMLAUF is closed on Mondays and on major holidays, including Independence Day, Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving, and December 24–25.
Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors (60+), $4 for active military/veterans, K–12 teachers, and college students, $2 for youth (K–12), and free for children under 5. Members visit free. The UMLAUF participates in Museums for All which offers free admission for families presenting an EBT card and photo ID.
