Our Year in Review

2023 was a tremendous year for the UMLAUF and we're excited to share with you what we accomplished. Our Annual Report details a year of impactful exhibitions, community engagement, and the launch of our Vision Plan.

We can't wait to see what's in store for 2024!

2023 At a Glance

More than 35,000 visitors from all over the world enjoyed the Garden or experienced one of our many public programs. In 2024, we look forward to continuing to expand and grow our programming and visitors, while we prepare to launch a capital campaign so that this iconic green space in the heart of Austin will one day be accessible by all and shared with a far wider local, national, and international group of visitors.

UMLAUF had 35,692 visitors: rentals brought 28%, volunteers 4%, admission 44%, tours 3%, programs 21%.
Out of 46 public events hosted at UMLAUF, 19 were free. 66 children attended summer camp, with 18 being children in foster care who received scholarships. 456 public school children received free tours. The after school art program, Shaping Space, relaunched in 6 public schools.

Community Impact

From free monthly Family Days to artists’ talks to the bronze conservation workshop, we offered educational opportunities for a wide variety of guests. Kids learned how to nurture a garden or sculpt a figure in clay. Adults danced to live music while a painter rendered an Umlauf sculpture in oil at our UMLAUF After Dark. Flying hawks and big-eyed owls helped teach the public about wildlife conservation at our free annual StrawFest. We have also begun to rebuild our Shaping Space program for children in Title 1 schools back to its pre-pandemic levels.

The Art

2023 was a big year for local and emerging artists at the UMLAUF. Apropos showcased the works of Austin artists in all stages of their careers, and Design Shine celebrated the talents of 16 young architects. Additionally, we put a spotlight on a selection of typically unseen Umlauf sculptures and exhibited the work of his colleague, David Deming.

UMLAUF had 4 free public exhibition openings with artists. 18 local artists exhibited in Apropos. $12,072 in grants was provided to local artists, architects, and designers. 16 emerging architects and designers showcased in Design shine 2022 in partnership with AIA Austin.
UMLAUF had 133 private rentals. 22 meetings, 9 memorials, 52 weddings, 13 small ceremonies, 12 photo shoots, 8 corporate, 11 non-profit, 6 other. $15,884 in discounts in rental fees for non profit and community events.

Private Events

10,000 guests visited the UMLAUF as part of a private rental of the space. Whether for a non-profit event, wedding, corporate meeting, or celebration of life, we're proud to host these moments of connection amongst art and nature.

Thank You To Our Supporters

None of this would be possible without the strong team of staff, volunteers, docents, interns, and Board members who help run the organization. It's a joy to have nurtured relationships with everyone who has come through the Garden, including our generous donors and sponsors.

UMLAUF had 11 volunteer group partnerships. 3,464 hours of volunteer work donated. UMLAUF had a 150 person garden clean up from YMSL. 21 educational internships provided. Launched a paid internship program to support 10 paid interns per year.
