35x35x35
JUNE 24 - OCTOBER 18, 2026
2026 is the UMLAUF Sculpture Garden + Museum’s 35th anniversary! As part of our celebration, we are organizing a special exhibition titled 35x35x35, highlighting 35 works by Charles Umlauf from 35 collectors. This exhibition will open June 24 and close on October 18.
The UMLAUF Sculpture Garden + Museum opened in 1991 following a generous gift of land and artwork from Charles Umlauf (1910–1994) and his wife, Angeline Umlauf (1915–2012). Since then, the museum has welcomed visitors from around the world to experience art, nature, and community across its six-acre site in the heart of Austin.
In celebration of its 35th anniversary, 35x35x35 brings together 35 works by Charles Umlauf, generously loaned from 35 private collections. Because many of these works are rarely on public view, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience the breadth of Umlauf’s artistic practice. Spanning a wide range of materials, styles, and subject matter, the works highlight the evolution of his six-decade career.
Umlauf moved to Austin from Chicago in 1941 to serve as a professor of sculpture and life drawing at the University of Texas. His early work from the 1940s reflects the emotional weight of a world at war, often expressed through deeply human, introspective forms. By the 1950s, his style shifted toward more balanced and classical compositions, sometimes with allegorical themes. In the decades that followed, Umlauf became increasingly drawn to movement, sensuality, and the expressive potential of the human figure.
Thank you for helping us celebrate Charles Umlauf’s enduring impact and the community that continues to support his work!

This project is supported in part by an Elevate Grant of Austin Arts, Culture, Music and Entertainment.
