Umlauf Prize 2018
September 6 - November 5
The UMLAUF Prize honors an outstanding graduate student in Art from the University of Texas at Austin with a cash award and exhibition at the UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum (UMLAUF). Charles Umlauf (1910-1994) taught at the University of Texas for 40 years, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1981. The UMLAUF's mission is to exhibit work by Umlauf, his influences, and other contemporary sculptors in a natural setting and to provide educational experiences that encourage the understanding and appreciation of sculpture. Umlauf's own work acknowledged his artistic forbears while presenting new approaches that looked toward the future. In that spirit, the UMLAUF Prize celebrates emerging artists from the University of Texas.
Huckaby (B.F.A Boston University; M.F.A Yale University) is known for his thickly-impastoed paintings that derive from his personal history, including his ongoing series of painted quilts and portraits. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the 2018 Texas State 2-Dimensional Artist, the 2017 Moss/Chumley North Texas Artist Award, the Smithsonian's Outwin Boochever Portrait award, a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He has exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Amon Carter Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Nasher Museum at Duke, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Whitney Museum. He is currently assistant professor of painting at the University of Texas at Arlington.
