Shaping Space is our outreach program for at-risk elementary and middle school students that encourages creative thinking, meaningful engagement, and the exploration of sculpture in a nurturing environment. Shaping Space classes meet once a week for 8 weeks. Instructors are experienced teaching artists who guide students to experiment and develop skills. We introduce students to various approaches to art making and studio practice through three-dimensional media. Students learn to express their ideas and artistic intent and to share their thoughts with their peers in a respectful and nurturing manner. The program concludes with an exhibition of their works and opening reception, allowing the students to engage with an audience at the UMLAUF.
The UMLAUF partners with organizations across Austin including Austin Sunshine Camps, Boys and Girls Clubs of Austin, Austin Independent School District, Lifeworks, and Refugee Services of Austin. This program is supported in part by the AT&T Foundation, Education Foundation of America, LGR Foundation and Texas Commission on the Arts. This project is also supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
