Ling-lin Ku uses digital fabrication techniques to play with scale, proximity, and textures of everyday items. The objects in her installations evade categorization, thereby upending our relationship to the known.

ON VIEW: NOVEMBER 20, 2019 - JUNE 2020

The UMLAUF and AIA Austin are proud to collaborate on their first annual exhibition in the garden: Design Shine. Created to showcase emerging talent in the fields of architecture and design, the juried competition yielded three extraordinary installations from three local teams, each of which invokes the history and topography of the UMLAUF site.

Bob "Daddy-O" Wade Pop Up

SEPTEMBER 10, 2020

On September 10, 2020, the UMLAUF will host a pop-up exhibition celebrating the zany work and wacky world of Bob "Daddy-O" Wade (1943-2019). A former student of Charles Umlauf, Daddy-O Wade holds a Guinness World Record and a Texas-sized reputation for iconic, over-the-top sculptures. The UMLAUF, along with the entire country, was saddened by the sudden loss of Bob Wade last year. The UMLAUF staff was working with Daddy-O on his upcoming exhibition scheduled to open Sept 10th. Daddy-O also gave a wonderful oral history interview as part of the Baylor Institute for Oral History grant. With the help of Daddy-O's family, friends and Texas A&M Press, we are honored to host this book signing event & pop-up show on September 10 from 6-8pm.

Courtney Egan: Superflora

Courtney Egan is best known for painstakingly translating photographs she takes of botanical forms into video-based sculptural installations that call into question the distinction between the natural and technological worlds. The central work in the UMLAUF exhibition will be Metaflora, a large interactive video projection. As viewers move along the walls, the floral imagery blossoms and fades, responding to their presence. Superflora will also feature Egan’s Sleepwalkers, a wondrous installation in which a bed of flowers is projected into a real clawfoot bathtub that reminds us of the role of nature as an essential human stimulus for relaxation; and a single video of undulating flowers on the exhibition’s entrance wall.

The UMLAUF Sculpture Garden consists of 60 sculptures by Charles Umlauf and 9 sculptures by various artists. Umlauf’s sculptures range from haunting expressionism, to detailed neoclassical realism, to lyrical abstraction.
