FROM SCRATCH

A month-long webinar series for students exploring sculpture from the ground up! In this afterschool series, classroom pods, homeschoolers, and individual learners will work alongside an UMLAUF Teaching Artist on a monthly theme that integrates traditional 3D art forms with experiments in 21st Century STEAM learning. Along the way, students will also meet Austin-based makers who are specialists within that theme!

Each month comes with a materials supply kit which you can pick up, and two trips to the Supplibrary at UMLAUF to pick up objects that could enhance your project and personally check-in with your Teaching Artist.

FROM SCRATCH: SCULPTURE GARDENS

Sep. 8 - 29, 2020 (4 classes)

Create your own sculpture garden from the ground up using recycled materials, seeds, potted plants and soil, and a Clay supply kit to make your own work of art for your garden. Students will investigate the differences between sculpture gardens and museums, will gain an understanding of what a Curator does, and will make their very own sculpture that will then be fired in a kiln!

Enrollment includes a supply kit with materials which you can pick up from the museum, and two trips to the Supplibrary at UMLAUF to pick up objects that could enhance your project. Trips to the Supplibrary also give students time to personally check-in with the Teaching Artist about their project!

FROM SCRATCH: ART APPLIED

Oct. 6 - 27, 2020 (4 classes)

Work with our From Scratch Teaching Artist and local furniture makers and designers to explore the intersections of artwork and functionality! Students in this course will use recycled newspaper, cardboard, and other familiar materials to design and build their own piece of furniture for their rooms and living spaces. A perfect course for creative kids with an engineering mindset. Enrollment includes a supply kit with materials which you can pick up from the museum, and two trips to the Supplibrary at UMLAUF to pick up objects that could enhance your project. Trips to the Supplibrary also give students time to personally check-in with the Teaching Artist about their project!

FROM SCRATCH: FELT/ FIBER/ FABRICS!

Dec. 3 - 17, 2020 (3 classes)

In our final Fall From Scratch, we’re diving into “soft sculpture” or 3D works of art made from natural fibers, plant-based materials, and “upcycled” fabrics. Students will get familiar with natural dyes, sewing and stitching techniques, and different fabrics and textures to explore new media art and also learn valuable skills for the future! Along the way, they’ll get a visit from one of Austin’s most creative fiber artists!

Enrollment includes a supply kit with materials which you can pick up from the museum, and two trips to the Supplibrary at UMLAUF to pick up objects that could enhance your project.
