“We hope to give visitors of all ages—from those who know little about Umlauf to those who frequent the Sculpture Garden regularly—a chance to see why Umlauf was one of the 20th century’s greatest sculptors. And by following a single artist's process, visitors will gain better insight into the creative process in general.”
The exhibition of recent gifts also offers the UMLAUF the opportunity to display a magnificent new gift, a 7’ limestone and glass sculpture from the Corona del Mar series by Damian Priour. This work was bequeathed to the UMLAUF by Austin the late Austin philanthropist, James Armstrong. Damian Priour served on the UMLAUF Board for years and was himself a beloved member of the community.

Umlauf Unveiled: Recent Gifts & Unseen Umlaufs features over fifty sculptures and drawings by Charles Umlauf (1910-1994), one of America’s most prolific artists. The exhibition celebrates the Museum’s recent receipt of major gifts and important loans from private collectors that enhance our understanding of Umlauf’s oeuvre. The objects will be complemented by touch screen monitors in the gallery of drawings and archival material that enhance the visitor’s understanding of Umlauf’s wide-ranging work as well as his lifelong friendship with his famous student, Farrah Fawcett. Umlauf Unveiled will extend into 2019, the 10th anniversary of Fawcett’s death.

In conjunction with the official opening on November 28, the UMLAUF is proud to present a special 90-minute Insights talk from Sally Whitman Coleman, Ph.D., who is also an Accredited Member of the Appraisers Association of America. Dr. Coleman talk about how to navigate trends in the art market will include a discussion of Umlauf’s work in the context of other art markets. Museum opens for public reception @ 6pm, Insights with Dr. Coleman @ 7pm.
