Supplication
"Supplication" or humble entreaty, a theme Umlauf explored frequently in both realistic and abstract expressions. Umlauf completed a ten-inch study for this piece in 1950 when he was awarded a Guggenheim grant. He spent his grant year working out a number of simplified terra cotta sculptures, to which he applied a variety of glazes. Gift of Virginia Steele Scott Estate.
